Holiday Greetings!

Hello Deco and Mid-Century Friends,

A few brightly colored leaves still cling to otherwise bare trees. Soon those stark limbs will be draped in holiday lights that twinkle in the night. The squares on our calendars are filling up with holiday parties, gift exchanges and family meals. We are busy making lists, decorating the house and wrapping presents. DAADS wants to remind you in all the hustle and bustle to take time to have some fun. We even have a few suggestions.

Magnet Elwood Bar

We are super excited to announce we now have an online store! Our first new product is a commemorative magnet honoring Detroit’s 1936, Art Deco Elwood Bar. It would make a great stocking stuffer don’t you think?

Looking for a fun activity for the whole family? We love the Ford House Holiday TourAmong the indoor décor are Eleanor’s beloved teardrop-shaped ornaments. Inspired by a Modernism exhibit she’d attended at the DIA in the 1950’s, Eleanor asked glass blowers at the Ford Rouge Plant to make these special ornaments. The grounds are a wonderland of holiday lights. Inspired by Cotswold-style cottages in England, Albert Kahn designed this home. Edsel, Eleanor, and their children moved into the home in 1928.

Matilda Dodge Wilson’s 110-room 88,000 sq ft home Meadowbrook also offers a dazzling Holiday Walk and Winter Wonder Lights. Built between 1926 and 1929, it was designed by Smith, Hinchman and Grylls. Both of these magnificent homes are wonderful to visit any time of year, but they are even more spectacular when dressed up for the holidays!  If food is more your style, check out the list of programs offered by the Culinary Historians of Ann Arbor. Many of the past programs are recorded and available on YouTube.

We’re already working on events for 2024! Early in the year we are teaming up with the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati OH for a virtual event featuring Neon signs. Did you know LFR Bellows, a licensed manufacturer of Claude Neon tube electrical signs once operated out of what is now the Jam Handy building? Bellows made the neon signs for Olympia Arena, the General Motors building, the Ambassador Bridge and the Penobscot air beacon. You’re not going to want to miss this event!
