The Modern

President's Notes

DEAR MEMBERS

This year, 2005, is the Detroit Area Art Deco Society's 19th year! And unbelievably, we will start planning for our 20th anniversary event soon.

Some of the original board members are still involved and volunteering their time for our events and for this magazine, our newsletter. Such dedication is rare to find - and there are some very dedicated people on our board. I can't thank them enough!

At our annual meeting held last month in September at Mario's in Detroit, we talked about our financial status, donations and our plans for the future.

We also presented this year's Eastern Michigan Historic Preservation program scholarship award winner with his check for $1,000. Congratulations to Don Gallio - you will see his award-winning paper in an issue in 2006.

We presented our preservation award for 2005 to the Simmons & Clark Jewelry Store in Detroit. You may remember an article on the restoration of their storefront from an issue of the Modern last year. The owner of Simmons & Clark, Michael Simmons, is continuing to restore the Broadway store with plans for an art deco wood door replacing the current aluminum glass door.

The annual meeting was a revival of our "Show and Tell" event at Mario's - really a party thrown for our members. We gave away Deco Society t-shirts, glowing martini glasses and talked about our Art Deco collectibles, fashions and even architecture. It was fun!

We're looking forward to our 20th year, and we're thinking about how to celebrate - we hope to see you at our next party!
